The North Woods Project was a continuation of the Cliff Falls, tying them to the surrounding area and then blending it all into the rest of the garden.
Design was centered around creating the appearance of the ledge rolling up and through the surrounding landscape. I began by logging all the rocks to be included in the project many had been blasted from the same quarry towards the beginning of the garden construction mid 90s. Each rock was carefully sketched taking note of the best side or of the position it may end up in the final design. Then I did sketches of proposed layouts and finally started perparations to build the project pulling together crew and equipment.
Weather conditions were far from ideal for starting as we went from frozen ground to a warm cycle thaw within days and the area turned to mud, then frozen again. Space also was at a minimum as we needed room to maneuver a large crane and set it up yet be able to bring large trucks and trailers hauling rocks in the 60-100 ton range. This meant they had to be close to the crane to unload and turn around and back out again while we still had to find room to stage all the rocks at the location. It was amazing that at times only inches made the difference. This was my last project at Quaker Hill Native Plant Garden in Pawling.
